"Tansada" is a long-established merchant house founded in 1808 at the end of the Edo period. Tangoya Johachi, the founder of the company, moved from Kanzaki village in Tango to Tokyo and opened a rice merchant, and has been doing business extensively. Awarded by Kyoto City as a long-established store that has been in business for over 200 years. It closed in August 1992.
This building is a "large Kyomachiya" that was built over a period of two years from September 1925 (Taisho 14). It is built on land of about 83 tsubo (275.96 m2) and has a storehouse. It is a precious "large Kyomachiya" and we can never build a similar building again. This building has been selected by the city of Kyoto as an "Individually Designated Kyomachiya", "Historical Scenic Building", and "Buildings and Gardens that Color Kyoto". In order to pass this building on to the next generation, we turned it into a lodging facility.
In September 2018, we opened “Kyomachiya Tansada”.
The entrance door of the building of the inn is a rice shop lattice. There is a dirt floor when you enter the entrance. It was originally a space with a courtyard. There is a clothing store on the left side of the entrance. This storehouse is built with mud walls more than 20 cm thick to protect property from large fires, and is believed to be older than the main building.
The main building is built using traditional construction methods, using precious materials such as straight-grained wood and soil. The shoji of the 10-tatami room is a snow-viewing shoji, and you can see the garden through the glass.
The corridor facing the garden is covered with uguisu that makes a sound when you walk on it. When this building was built, there was a rice riot, and a system was created to protect oneself from intruders with high walls and corridors.
In the garden, there are two lanterns and extravagant stones such as Kurama stone are arranged in stepping stones. Pine trees and maple trees are planted here, and you can enjoy the green foliage in spring and the foliage in autumn.
At night, you can enjoy the illuminated lanterns and maple trees.
Behind the garden is a bamboo fence covered with wood bandages. This bamboo fence is made by shaving and combining bamboo and bamboo joints. This is a rare bamboo fence that can only be seen at Katsura Imperial Villa and Shugakuin Imperial Villa.
Although it is located in the center of the city, it is surrounded by high walls and bamboo fences, maintaining a quiet space. Here you can spend a leisurely time and relax.
We would like to preserve this building and pass on the traditions and culture of Kyoto to the next generation. In addition, we value the connections we have built with the local people, and would like to contribute to the development of the area.
With this in mind,
We aim to be an attractive accommodation facility that is typical of Kyoto.
I would appreciate it if you could accept the thought and use it.
